"I'm in Trouble, Please Send Money": The Emergency Scam

By the Bakkar team ·

A hospital bill. A stolen wallet. A stranded friend. An exam fee due in an hour. The details change; the shape doesn't: something terrible is happening, it has to be solved right now, and you're the only one who can.

Why urgency is the tell

Urgency stops you from thinking, checking or asking anyone. A real emergency has family, friends and banks to call. A person you met online last week turning to you, of all people, is the strongest sign of a scam there is.

Example messages, written by us from reported patterns. Each one has been checked against the rule Bakkar applies to a first message.

  • please help yaar, mom is in hospital, just send 5000 to my gpay Bakkar would deliver this
  • urgent!! send to my upi 9876543210@ybl, will return tonight Bakkar holds this back as a first message

What Bakkar does, and what it can't

The second example carries a number, so it can't be a first message. The first gets through: it's ordinary words. No app can tell a real plea from a fake one. The safe rule is the same every time: don't send money to someone you've only met online. If you want to help, offer to call the hospital or a family member yourself.

What to do

  1. Stop replying. You don't owe a scammer an explanation.
  2. Don't pay. Paying once never ends it; it tells them you will pay again.
  3. Save the evidence before you block: screenshots of the profile, the chat, any numbers, UPI IDs or links they sent.
  4. Report and block them on Bakkar from the chat or their profile. See what happens when you report.
  5. Lost money? Call 1930 at once. The national cybercrime helpline can ask banks to freeze the money while it is still moving, so the first hours matter. Then file the complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
  6. Tell someone you trust. Scams work best on people who feel alone with them. If it's weighing on you, Tele MANAS on 14416 is free and open 24x7.
